Bunchgrass Ski/Snowshoe, 5 February, 2023

A group of 16 skiers, snowshoers, and a split boarder met at the usual rendezvous of Smith’s Marketplace at 10 a.m. We convoyed up the canyon to the parking space on the right after Tony Grove turnoff. We started on the trail at about 11 a.m. It was cloudy with a temperature starting about 30 degrees. Lots of white stuff, but the first creek crossing still had some open water, so it was a bit tricky to navigate. The temperature increased initially as we trekked up the valley then the sky closed in, temps dropped, and precipitation started. That became horizontally-blowing wet snow, so we headed into the shelter of trees for lunch at Goring pond. After lunch, folks headed back through the blowing snow. There were gear issues for one skier so we ended up heading back in two clusters. Everyone came out safely. We passed other snowshoers and two sets of yurt skiers heading in and out of the valley. One gentleman had pitched a tent in the snow so he could spend the weekend building an igloo for future enjoyment. A good day to play in the snow!

Trip Summary:
  • 16 trekkers: Susan, Brent, Ralph, Chris, Dave W., Jane, Kathy, Dave P., Michelle, David, John, Deanna, Linda, Keith, Catherine, and Teresa (leader)
  • Drove 23 miles to the Bunchgrass parking area, just past the Tony Grove turnoff on US-89 in Logan Canyon
  • Started out about 10:45, lunch about 12:25 - 12:45, (mostly) back at the trailhead at 1:40
  • Overcast skies, mid-30s temperature, started snowing lightly about 11:00 with heavier snow after 12:00
  • Traveled about 3.7 miles with about 770 feet of ascent and descent
